Ronald Van Heertum, M.D.
Vice President, Molecular Imaging
Dr. Van Heertum is internationally known for his work with applications of SPECT and PET brain imaging. He has held several national roles in the American College of Radiology including Chairman of the Nuclear Medicine & PET Accreditation Committee, Chairman of the Accreditation Chief's Committee and Vice Chairman (Accreditation) of the Commission on Quality & Safety: He is also a life-member and past Chairman of the American Board of Nuclear Medicine.
Dr. Van Heertum began his career heading up the Division of Nuclear Medicine at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. He subsequently completed a NIH Research Fellowship in Nuclear Medicine at SUNY HSC – Syracuse and then returned to New York to become Director of Nuclear Medicine and Program Director of the Nuclear Medicine Residency and Nuclear Radiology Fellowship programs at St. Vincent’s Hospital & Medical Center. He subsequently became Associate Director of the Department of Radiology and was promoted to the level of Professor of Clinical Radiology at New York Medical College.
Later, Dr. Van Heertum was recruited by Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons to become Director, Nuclear Medicine Division, Director, Columbia Kreitchman PET Center and Professor of Clinical Radiology. Dr. Van Heertum subsequently was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Department of Radiology and Professor of Radiology at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center. In 2008, he assumed the position of Interim Chairman of the Department of Radiology after which he became Executive Vice-Chairman/ Chief Academic Officer for the Radiology Department. During his time at Columbia, Dr. Van Heertum established an internationally renowned clinical and research PET Center. In addition, he continued his research on brain SPECT/PET imaging and participated in many clinical trials in oncology, neurology and psychiatry.
Dr. Van Heertum is widely published in the field of imaging with more than 170 original peer reviewed articles and 45 reviews, book chapters, and books including a text book on PET and SPECT Brain Imaging that is now in its 4th edition. Dr. Van Heertum is also a reviewer for multiple journals and is currently an associate editor for the International Journal of Molecular Imaging. His work has been presented around the world with more than 200 national and international scientific presentations. He has also trained more than 50 fellows in Nuclear Medicine and Nuclear Radiology.
